Banfield, NAVC launch third annual VET Report
Banfield Pet Hospital unveiled its third annual Veterinary Emerging Topics (VET)® Report in partnership with the North American Veterinary Community (NAVC). The 2019 VET Report examines the management of osteoarthritis (OA) in overweight and obese dogs and cats – and identifies opportunities to improve their care. The percentage of overweight and obese pets has reached epidemic levels, and diseases commonly associated with excess weight – including OA – are on the rise. This year's report explores not only the diagnosis and treatment of OA, but also the barriers encountered by veterinary teams that impact their ability to provide recommended care. In fact, Banfield found 51 percent of dogs and 41 percent of cats newly diagnosed with OA were considered overweight or obese in 2017 – and that key barriers preventing appropriate care for OA pets include cost of diagnostic services and treatment; owner noncompliance; owner not recognizing their pet is in pain; and owner not accepting their pet is overweight.

LIVESTOCK

Rare strain of Bovine TB found in North Dakota beef cow herd
According to Bovine Veterinarian, an investigation is underway by state veterinarians in North Dakota after a rare strain of bovine tuberculosis (TB) was identified in a beef cow herd. “In late 2018, we were notified that two adult beef cows originating from the herd tested positive for Mycobacterium bovis at out-of-state slaughter plants,” State Veterinarian Dr. Susan Keller says. “The National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa, confirmed the TB diagnosis in the cows.” The herd in Sargent County was later tested by state and federal veterinarians. Five more cows were found to have confirmed TB cases. There are more tests being conducted. According to officials, it was the first time this strain of TB had been found in the U.S. The type of TB is similar to cases identified in Mexican cattle.

Lois Kolkhorst and other prominent property rights advocates at a news conference to announce the filing of HB 991 and SB 421, according to a release. The legislation was touted at the conference as a means to vastly improve the eminent domain process for thousands of Texans who are faced each year with the prospect of losing their private property through forced condemnation. “I would like to thank Rep. Burns and Sen. Kolkhorst for their steadfast commitment to fixing an eminent domain system that is commonly abused and designed to favor private companies who subsidize their profits with the power of condemnation,” said McKnight at the news conference. “Texans deserve better. We deserve an eminent domain process that is open and transparent, that is fair and respectful of our partnership in energy infrastructure, and that holds private condemnors accountable if they don’t do it right.”
