The Wizard of Oz thrilled audiences in movie theaters when it was released in 1939, and because it has been replayed for decades on television, it has never wandered far from our imaginations. It was based on L. Frank Baum’s book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which was written in 1899. One of the most frustrating things in my tech support / sales career was when I thought my customers didn’t realize how smart I was. I had done all the hard work for them, after all. I went to college to become an expert. I attended meetings and seminars to learn about the latest and greatest services. I put together all sorts of sophisticated brochures to share my knowledge. I created amazing spreadsheets showing how my product would pay for itself. Occasionally I will race a street stock car at the local dirt race track. It’s an amazing experience. The roar of a 383 motor blasting down the straight away; the smell of the dirt track mixed with the smell of racing fuel and a touch of rear end oil; the feel of the 3,200-pound car talking to you through the steering wheel; being surrounded by 19 other cars all attempting to claim the same spot on the track that you are – it awakens your senses to an intensity that makes your heart rate race just writing about it.

Some of the earlier software programs we used in our vet practice required a couple of hours, on the last day of the year, to reset all the software and data collection points. I had to collect all the year-end data and print the year-end reports before I could reset everything to zero and start the New Year.

You may get edgy when you see Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn on that newly hired college graduates’ computer screen. Fear not. A study by the University of Melbourne shows that employees who use social media at work are at least nine percent more productive compared to those who aren’t allowed access to it.
